At the bell ending the round (two). Joe dropped his hands and Baer landed a left and a right before the referee could get in between them.

"That made me mad " Joe said later.

Max Baer was knocked down twice in round three.

Between rounds Dempsey tried to give his charge some confidence.

"He's hit you, but he hasn't taken you out. He can't hurt you." Jack said

"Well then you had better check the ref, because someone's beating the hell out of me out there", Baer muttered.(1)

The fight ended in round four with Max Baer being counted out.
