James J. Jeffries

The Old Warrior

Circa 1940

In the years that followed Reno, Jeffries went home to Burbank and his farm and his beloved wife, Frieda. For a time, he drank too much, but in that as in all things in life Jeffries iron will prevailed. He tried his hand a preaching, following in his father's footsteps, he found himself like most Americans in need of money by the late 1920's and he went back on the road sparring with his old rival Tom Sharkey.

He still got together with old friends, pictured hear with Barney Oldfield...

He operated Jeffries Barn, a proving ground and training center for young fighters...

But across the spanning of the years one could not help but wonder if Jeff still was not haunted by echos of Reno.
