Jeffries Brothers

The Jeffries brothers shared more than a common heritage. At the turn of the century, Jack Jeffries, after working for a period of years as a sparring partner with Tommy Ryan, set out on his own ring career.

By ten days before Christmas, 1900, the press was reporting,

"Champion Jim Jeffries and his brother Jack have patched up their grievances...The two brothers had a falling out owing to the fact that Jack took up fighting as a business against the wishes of the champion."

By the spring of 1902 Jack Jeffries entered the ring against a rising star, Jack Johnson. Before a huge Los Angeles crowd, and with his brother the champion in attendance, Jack Jeffries was a heavy favorite. The press describing him as being built like a Greek God. Through the first four rounds Jack Jeffries comported himself well, landing a particularly hard blow to Johnson's nose near the end of round four. Later the press would report that following that blow, Johnson, "glared like a wild beast." An aroused Johnson came out for round five and with a devastating upper cut knocked Jack Jeffries out. 1

Jack Jeffries soon dropped from the ranks of potential champions and spent the balance of his ring related career as a sparring partner for his more famous brother.

In later years ,the Jeffries brothers briefly toured together putting on sparring exhibitions.
